Great alternative to a TV in college dorm., 2008-11-05
Having had an basic Avermedia TV tuner on a Vista desktop for two years, which has worked great, when we started looking for an option for TV for our college-bound daughter, an Avermedia USB TV tuner was our first choice.

I called Avermedia and asked their advice about the best options. The lady I spoke to was extremely helpful. The Avertv Hybrid Volar Max was a brand new product at the time and she recommended this for several of the options and features, including HD and FM, over the basic USB TV Tuner. We were able to find it on Amazon for about $80 (the price has since dropped).

Our daughter has it hooked up to the cable in her dorm and it is an easy and convenient way for her to watch and record TV. Unlike a TV set, she can lie comfortably on her bed with the laptop right beside her.

On both our computers we are using Windows Media Center rather than the AverMedia Center. I did not even consider installing the AverMedia version, because the Windows Media setup on Vista was so easy (unlike other Vista problems). We already had the remotes and infrared units for Windows Media.

As far as I know the USB set up went without a hitch and there have been no problems. I would highly recommend this product as a TV option for college kids, or in areas where you don't have room for TV.

I cannot speak for any of the other features of the tuner, but used with a direct cable connection this is a great TV tuner.

    Doesn' always record, 2008-10-24
I have been using this for over a month, I wanted a solution to record TV since I don't have cable and using the Digital box will only allow me to record the channel I am watching.

The TV reception is better than I get on my TV and I can watch multiple shows at 1x.

I setup to record, but it doesn't always record. The documentation is vague so I am not sure if I am setting this up correctly. It appears to record a show and then close down. I don't' know if it is a memory issue.

    DISAPPOINTED, 2008-10-06
WITH THIS DEVICE THE ONLY CHANNEL I CAN RECEIVED IS AN ALL SPANISH CHANNEL. IF THE MANUFACTURER WOULD THROW IN SOME SPANISH LESSONS THEN I WILL RAISE MY RATING SCORE.

    QAM Tuner Needs Improvement, 2008-09-06
This is almost perfect for notebook. The antenna clip fits perfectly on the edge of my DELL M1530's LCD Monitor. The only problem with this product, when I switched the channel from SD to HD (480p to 1080i), my system suddenly crashed (blue screen of death). I tried Beta application for QAM Tuner on Media Center and the latest drivers for Volar MAX but they have the same problem.

    I'm running Core 2 Duo 2.50GHz/ NVIDIA 8600GT 256MB Graphic Card/ 4GB DDR2 Memory/ Vista Premium SP1/ No bloatwares installed.
