I love this OS, 2007-12-24 I've been playing around with linux for over two years, and I love it. I have a small pc at home that runs windows so I can do things that require windows (like some sites require ie or games), but other than that, my laptop for school and my main pc at home both run ubuntu.
If you're thinking about switching there are a few things I think you should consider. -If you are happy with Windows, why leave a good thing, right? Same thing goes here, if you are happy with what you had you'll just miss it. -There is a learning curve, so do not expect that you can do all tasks right away. Dual boot is recomended for beginners, but try really hard to do it on ubuntu before switching. (there are even ways to install ie 6 on linux systems) -With linux, remember there is almost always a free version. For any piece of software you could ever need, there is usually a free version. It may not be perfect, but if its either settle with the GIMP or shell out $300 for Photoshop, its up to your needs and budget. -Most 3d games will not work on linux, and even some that are for linux are teduius to set up and install. So if you are a gamer, no, linux is not for you.
There are many other things to think about, but with a bit of research I'm sure you can find many articles about the subject. I've enjoyed watching ubuntu grow, and it is a great OS with lots of potential...oh and did I mention, upgrades are free too!

WINDOWS?, 2007-12-20 UBUNTU 7.10 SIMPLY IS THE REPLACEMENT FOR WINDOWS. IF YOU LIKE TO SPEND MONEY, LIKE VIRUSES, LIKE SPY-WARE, LIKE A BIG CORPORATION LOOKING OVER YOUR SHOULDER, LIKE USING HALF A DAY INSTALLING EVERYTHING THEN BY ALL MEANS GET WINDOWS. IF YOU DON'T WELCOME TO UBUNTU 7.10! I'M TYPING THIS REVIEW ON IT NOW. I RARELY TURN ON MY WINDOWS MACHINE ANY MORE...

Rough, Rugged, and Ridiculously Awesome, 2007-12-17 I have to agree with the former reviewer that there are cheaper means of getting this operating system, such as downloading an .iso image and burning it to CD. However if you were to give this as a gift to someone else it certainly looks much nicer than some silly disc you've scribbled "Ubuntu" on. Perhaps this way the Ubuntu people make some money on a seriously amazing software product. I am running the OS now, and it is elegant and stable.

An Excellent Operating System, 2007-12-17 The previous reviewer gave Ubuntu two stars simply because he could get it free elsewhere.
I think most folks browsing Amazon who come across Ubuntu are going to know what it is. Simply put, Ubuntu is a Linux based Operating System that will run on any PC. The product on the page you're viewing at present is for folks with AMD64 based processors.
Ubuntu is the OS of the future. And while there's a bit of a learning curve associated with leaving Windows behind, it is well worth it.
With Ubuntu, you can do everything Windows can do without the instability and without having to shell out money every time you need to acquire software. That's because Ubuntu is a free, open-source OS as is nearly all software you will need to meet your day-to-day computer needs. And never again will you see Microsoft's blue screen of death. Ubuntu is unbelievably stable.
This version, 7.10 (also known as Gutsy Gibbon) is a major step forward in terms of hardware compatibility (my modem and wireless card in my HP laptop just worked without me having to install any drivers).
On the downside, and this is true for Windows 64 bit as well, Java and Flash are still unsupported by Sun and Adobe on 64 bit systems. The good folks in the open source community have stepped up however to create to packages that will fill the bill for you though--Gnash (an open flash player) and Iced Tea (an open Java platform). Alternatively, you may install 32 bit Firefox with 32-bit Java and Flash plugins.

UBUNTU: ONE OF THE BEST PRODUCTS IN THIS DECADE, 2007-12-06 I've been a Ubuntu user for a few months now and decided to write a review to help others. Try Ubuntu to experience a better Operating System (I think not only better, but also best). I really got inspired by the Ubuntu Promise (No commercial intention), Ubuntu Philosophy of Software Freedom and community support. I'm impressed with the Ubuntu's simplicity / user-friendliness / power / security etc. Ubuntu comes with all the best open source / free software (Open Office, Firefox, etc.) and has a strong community and is growing super fast. Thanks to the great minds behind the Ubuntu, GNU/Linux, Open Office and the Open Source / Free Software Community.
