Dr D Adams Series, 2008-08-02 I never received the item. I tried using a 25.00 gift card which I have on file at Amazon, however the item was to come from a reseller who would not accept the 25 gift card toward the purchase price. I was not aware it was to come from a reseller when I purchased it. I contacted the reseller and cancelled or told him I would refuse it when it came. One did come from Barnes & Noble which I returned for credit to my AMEX.

Outstanding Movie Series!, 2008-08-01 This is the best miniseries I've ever seen. An this is quite a remarkable achievement for a historically accurate work of non-fiction over the thousands of works of fiction out there. Just as a dramatic movie it's spellbinding. But when you consider it actually happened it's incredible.
I warn you, once you start it you will want to finish all three discs in one sitting.
As to the DVD set, the menus and special features don't disappoint. They are well and attractively made. The quality is excellent, and avoids useless and unrelated junk that clutters so many DVD special features with nonsense. The best feature is titled, "Facts Are Tricky Things". This turns on parchment like pop-ups (using the sub-title function of your DVD player,) as you watch the movies that fill in historical facts and common knowledge from that time that someone from this time wouldn't ordinarily know. The best example is at the beginning of the sixth episode when Thomas Jefferson uses a cliche that I have never understood before. The pop-up explained it's meaning concisely, and cleared it up for me. But watch it the first time without these and enjoy the drama.
Most importantly, I think this is the first portrayal of the Revolutionary period that doesn't paint the Founding Fathers, especially Washington, as larger than life for dramatic effect. The story is more compelling as it actually was without making men into Superman.
I'm a big history buff. And the Revolutionary period of the U.S. is my favorite. (I carry the Declaration of Independence, The Constitution and the Federalist Papers on both my laptop and iPod at all times.) And I couldn't find anything that contradicts the historical accounts I've read. While some portrayed scenes were not directly out of the historical record, (and they couldn't be as no one was following these people around with a camera back then,) they are in keeping with the diaries and letters I have read. While I haven't gone over the seven episodes with a fine tooth comb looking for mistakes like a Science-Fiction fan does with Stargate or Star Trek, I have found no historical errors at all.
More important, this is the most entertaining movie(s) I have seen in years. Hollywood's so-called Blockbusters aren't a tenth as good. Even people who profess to dislike History enjoy this DVD set. It goes to first place in my list of all time best movies ever.
An unforgettable portrait of a nation in birth, 2008-07-31 HBO has produced some interesting historical mini-series such as "Elizabeth-the first" with Helen Mirren & Jeremy Irons and they've not disappointed us with this adaptation of the Pulitzer prize winning book, "John Adams". Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney deserve all the awards they can get for their portrayals of John & Abigail Adams--these characters come off as human rather than card board cutouts. Also excellent are Tom Wilkinson as the hedonistic Benjamin Franklin, Stephen Dillane as the enigmatic, conflicted Thomas Jefferson, Rufus Sewell as the conniving Alexander Hamilton and David Morse as George Washington. I thought at first this would be a dry history lesson but how mistaken I was when the acting and direction pulled me in!! Definitely recommended for all history buffs and lovers of fine drama.
John Adams (HBO Miniseries) , 2008-07-31 A harmless DVD but a complete anticlimax of a film. Best watched with a US format box, doesn't work on a UK machine.
Amazing History , 2008-07-31 I watched the series on HBO and wanted to have it to show my children and grandchildren. It is fabulous and will give you goosebumps watching the birth of our country. Cudos for HBO for doing this series.I hope they will be inspired to do more shows that inspire not degrade.
