    Wish there were a children's version, 2008-09-28
I just finished watching the seven episodes back-to-back.

The story of John Adams and his contemporaries is something young people in the U.S. need to understand. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this for children and young people because of the graphic nature of the tar/feather scene, the amputation scene, and the surgery scene. I understand that graphic scenes are something adults are supposed to tolerate (although I don't tolerate them well), but it's wrong to expect children to handle those scenes, even if they see graphic violence in movies and games.

Was it necessary to show the saw hacking through the limb? And was it necessary to show the breast surgery in graphic detail? For that matter, was it necessary to show John and Abigail celebrating their reunion with a quick nooner? It felt gratuitous, like because it's an HBO movie they had to be sure to include enough blood and toss in some spontaneous sex, but unfortunately these scenes make the movie unacceptable for the audience that would most benefit from understanding John and Abigail.

Well done series for adults, great acting (although Thomas Jefferson was wooden), powerful score, but I learned more from the book, and enjoyed the ride every word of the way.

    John Adams, 2008-09-26
We watched the John Adams DVD after purchasing it on Amazon.com. It is awesome! At times very graphic, the movie is realistic and thought provoking. It makes a serious statement about war, frienships and alliances, loyalties, marriage.....and history of course! According to the movie, there was nothing glamorous about life in the 1700's. The depictions of Adams and his compatriots are fascinating, with Thomas Jefferson and George Washington fairly accurately portrayed, in additon to Adams himself. The men respected each other but they were clearly not friends. Although he was not as popular as Jefferson or Washington, Adams did what he believed was right and stood up for his own ideals. His legal defense of some British soldiers was based on his own ethical standards and what he believed the United States was all about....that all men were entitled to representation, regardless of their belief systems. He endured ridicule and threats as a result of his defense of the soldiers--but he was right! An inspiring film! Very well done! Excellent acting.

Anybody can play the president, really?, 2008-09-23
Maybe anybody could PLAY the president but only Giamatti and Linney can play John Adams and Abigail Adams better than anyone. What I love most about this film is how satisfying this story is--intelligent with great dialogue, stellar first-rate acting, realism, action, passion, sacrifice, love. This film is one of the most intelligent work brought to screen that I've seen in quite awhile. For example, did you know the white house was built on the backs of slaves or how violent tarring and feathering a person can be? Kudos to Tom Hanks, HBO, Kirk Ellis for bringing the "sexy" back into our founding fathers and creating such a vivid and organic work amendable to the 21st audience. History is sexy and riveting at the same time.

A master piece. I fell in love with all the characters, 2008-09-23
It is a rare thing when I watch a series and do not sell it. I will never sell this gem. Actors I thought were reasonable seemed to emerge into wonderful acting such that they took me into the time and the people and I lived with them and felt all they felt.

This is not a series or a "show." This is directors, producers and actors giving their ultimate best capacities and they only deserve repeated praise.
