    Warning...linux is addictive!, 2007-08-03
This is an edit of my previous review of ubuntu.
I first gave ubuntu a one star rating and warned about ubuntu's lack of support for dial-up...But the benefits of ubuntu for dial-up users makes ubuntu a five star operating system and it's value far exceeds XP.

I would suggest buying "The Official Ubuntu" book. The install cd is packaged with the book and the time you'll save looking for answers is well worth the extra ten bucks.

Buy a real modem. I bought an Actiontec 56K serial modem here on Amazon for under twenty bucks. It works great!

Download gnome-ppp (it's free) while you're waiting for ubuntu and your new modem to arrive. Copy it to a cd or floppy and install it on ubuntu. Gnome-ppp is what makes ubuntu work with dial-up.

You'll now be able to spend your time surfing instead of bogged down by XP and anti-virus updates...and that's a huge improvement over windoze! My connection speed went from 26.4K to 28.8K, not a big increase but web page images load in about half the time...don't know why.

Now for the warning. I'm not a geek but ubuntu has addicted me. Linux can easily become a game and a great game it is. Thousands of quests and mysteries to solve.

Serious Contention for Best OS, 2007-07-18
I have been using Linux for about a year now, and have some good ones, and some bad ones. I've used Xandros, Red Hat, Suse, Fedora Core, Linspire, and Ubuntu Dapper. I have to give it to Feisty Fawn, though, of all of the distros I've come across, this one is the closest to being right that there is. All of Mark Shuttleworth's hard work is coming to fruition, and it shows, as Ubuntu 7.04 has recently surpassed Mac OSX as #2 in browser hits, meaning the number of OSes that are using the internet. For those of you fearing the switch to a free (as in beer and speech) operating system, know that there are many before you who have jumped ship without looking back. A few things to mention:

First, the install is easy. A few click, a very straightforward interface that anyone can understand, and you're on your way. You can easily choose between dual-booting (that is, having 2 operating systems, a la XP and Ubuntu), or having only Ubuntu.
Second, Ubuntu comes with most of the programs any basic home user is going to need. Open Office . org is an Office alternative that saves files that can be used on MS Office, Excel, etc. Firefox is the single best web-browser available for safety (use this on Windows, too, if you aren't already). Evolution mail is straight forward, and takes the place of Outlook very well. It's interface is similar to Ourlook or Thunderbird, or Apple's Mail.app. It comes with a dictionary, excellent advanced text editor (think notepad, but better), scientific calculator... for your high school student's Trig... yay!, not to mention a plethora of games, plus a skype client.
Third, as mentioned in other posts, the lack of a constantly monitoring anti-spyware and anti-virus program makes the computer snappier.
Lastly, most of your hardware is going to work right out of the box. Much easier than having to find drivers online. Updates to both your operating system and the items that you install are as easy as a click and a password.

Now, I am not saying that it's perfect. Shockwave doesn't work under it out of the box. It can be made to do so with some cleaver uses of Wine, however. Most Windows programs can be ported in this manner. It takes some patience to deal with, but, spend a few days with it, and make it the way you like it, and you're going to find that Ubuntu is a strong Operating system. The work, by the way, is worth it. It's free to download from their website... and free beats 139 dollars anyday.

Don't waste your money, go buy Windows!, 2007-07-16
I have been using computers for well over 4 years now and can say that this was one of the worst games I had ever purchased. For one, in order to even install the game you have to completely ERASE ALL YOUR DATA! I did not know this when I installed and lost almost all of my hotmail messages. Second, I was really suprised that this did not run on my wife's apple macintosh. In this day and age, is it really acceptable that software only run on dell computers, but not on apple or even IBM's? Well, I always try to look at the glass half full, so I continued installed and found that not only had my start menu had moved to the top, but all my programs had been moved around. I couldn't even find the "Notepad" word processor. I finnally gave up when I couldn't find limewire or internet explorer installed anywhere, so I gave up and threw my computer away and bought a brand new laptop instead.

It's fine for basic stuff, 2007-06-07
it's really FREE You can actually download an .iso file and burn it onto a CD
unlike other distributions (SUSE/RedHat) where you have 5 CDs to burn

Ubuntu Linux is good for web surfing
has good driver support (scanner driver not there however hmm)
    doesn't really need antivirus/antispyware
it has openoffice (alternative to MS office)
It has GIMP (free alternative to Adobe photoshop and much better)
it has a CD/DVD burner included
    and some sound/media apps....hehe

Effects like beryl (the cube) runs great even on my HPze4335us (4-yr old Win2000/XP made laptop)
very space saving <2 GB used in the initial install:)

however, you need to learn the code to run ubuntu or any linux correctly..

ubuntu always asks for my "root" account when I make system changes
and I'm typing "su" into the command terminal to try to install a program made for the Linux OS. and my password doesn't work...so..that's a downside for me (my root password works elsewhere just not in the terminal)
I would rather click the icon the way through...more interactiveness just like Windows instead of typing it lengthy commands...if not I would give ubuntu 5 stars
