A great *book* replacement, 2008-01-28 Love it! Actually want to give it 4 1/2 stars. Everyone else has pretty much covered anything I would want to say, so I'll just hit the key points:
-Display: Beautiful, crisp, clear, easy to read. A thousand times better than reading from any computer or mobile device screen
-Reading experience: Great, after a few minutes you completely forget you're not reading an actual physical book.
-Big Next/Previous page buttons: Just as annoying as everyone says, too easy to hit, and the only reason this isn't 5 star. Easily fixed by a software update in the future (please, Amazon?) to allow the option of only activating the buttons on a double-click for example.
-Book buying experience: Easy and transparent
-Overal User Interface: If you can't figure it out, you're probably busy drooling on yourself and can't read anyway
Check out the user manual (available online) and/or various web posts before you buy, as many of the people criticizing the Kindle are giving bad information about things you supposedly can't do. Also some of the features aren't obvious just from a picture of the Kindle. And don't forget that there are plenty of free e-books that can be accessed by the Kindle in addition to the selections available through Amazon.

Lovely but needs redesign, 2008-01-28 Both my wife and I are enjoying this. It's light, very readable, stylish, and such a convenience when you want a book now! Here's an improvement that needs to be made and one I'm surprised Amazon didn't figure out before the introduction. The sidebars on each side are really in the way. Where do you hold this thing?? So often I accidentally hit the 'next page', 'previous page', or 'back' bars. They run along both sides with nowhere to conveniently put your hands. In trying to make things so easy, you've made it more difficult! Dont' worry about left-handers. They've been living in a right-handed world all their lives..they can cope. Put three buttons at the bottom of the screen (preferably on the right hand side) and let it go at that. You have to be able to hold this thing someplace. My wife has taken this thing away from me, but I don't think I'll get another until you fix this. Please be prompt since I want one.

No more sticker shock..., 2008-01-28 Like most people, the $399 initial price was quite a hurdle to get over. I finally got over it rationalizing the free wireless internet would make it worthwile. Funny thing, I rarely use the internet feature!
There are a few complaints about the cover, and upon testing it out, I had quickly tossed the cover aside. But I gave it another shot with a small bit of velcro in the lower right and upper left corners and the cover has become an integral part of the experience. No other solution is as compact or perfect.
As for the kindle itself, wonderful. I've owned many ebook devices, including the Gemstar reb1100, handsprings, palms, dell axims, blackberry, franklin ebookman, you name it. The Gemstar remains my favorite, but they never had a lot of great content and they went out of business. I just loved the feel of that device and I wish Amazon would actually adopt something more long those lines.
Regardless, the Kindle is wonderful in its own ways. The e-ink display is by far the best electronic reading display around. My only complaint is that I wish it had a backlight for reading at night. I'm not a big fan of clip-on reading lights. At the very least I'm hoping there will be a lightwedge type solution in the near future...
What really blows the competition out of the water is a combination of four things (1) wispernet - makes shopping incredibly easy, (2) amazon collection of books - right out of the box, there's a ton of wonderful stuff to choose from, including Stephen King's newest release, (3) the $9.99 price tag for most books, including said new release from King, and (4) Sample Chapters - incouraging me to download and browse books I might have overlooked otherwise.
All these features work wonderfully together. Just the other day a friend of mine was telling me of a wonderful new book he was reading, within seconds I was in the amazon store, and had the first few chapters downloaded as a sample to read at a convenient time. Amazing.
I love my kindle and its encouraged me to read a ton more than usual. After all that, the initial sticker shock has worn away and I don't even think about it anymore... :)

Less Books is that Good?, 2008-01-28 Finally got the kindle last week. I was excited about it till I realized I wouldn't be able to do the crosswords or sudoko from the papers. Ok, I can get by then I bought a book and everytime I moved I would hit the previous page tab...and back it would go...I guess until I get used to this... this is going to happen over and over again...

The iTunes of Publishing, 2008-01-27 I have been using Kindle for 3 weeks now and am amazed at how quickly I've gotten used to this product. Besides being easy to use and very clear for reading, a book will download to Kindle in less than 30 seconds. I decided to purchase the latest book by a popular author at 5 AM and was able to start reading the book before 5:01 AM! This was on the same day the book was released to retail and on-line stores! It is really instant gratification! Kindle is very portable & much less bulky than a book. The print size can be adjusted for the reader's comfort level. There is no book to store in the house when I am finished reading it. When shut off, Kindle remembers what page you are on. There is an easy to access dictionary built in.
The negative aspects are with the design of the product. The on/off switch is located on the back of the product and somewhat hard to get at when used with the Kindle's book cover. The large "next page" and "back page" buttons are easy to accidentally hit when picking up Kindle while it is turned on. I am also surprised by what books are not available with Kindle. It is really great for new releases and bestsellers. I am sure that as Kindle catches on (and it should; it is really to publishing what iTunes is to music) more titles will become available.
