Nice Palm, but noticeable issues, 2005-12-21
I am a demanding consumer and $299.99 for a PDA, I expect a lot from it.
From a software point of view, T|X has the same basic programs as the previous models. Programs such as Calendar, Notes, Tasks, Doc-To-Go, MP3 players... Experienced Palm user would feel right at home, minimum learning curve.
It is, however, still lack a solid file explorer. For anyone that uses a SD card (probably 99.9%), a good file explorer is a must. T|X's picture displaying program is still under powered, slow and inability to customize many settings and functions. The email program is still an issue with T|X, if you had problems before, you will probably face the same situation.
Be aware of the new Graffiti 2 program, the review is half and half on this. Some people pick it right up, while the other just can't stand it. So, if you never tried the new Graffiti, you should go to the nearest retail store and play with it.

From hardware point of view, T|X has a wonderful large screen. It also has excellent wifi and bluetooth, which is easy to setup. Memory has improved.
There are some hardware problems that I see with the T|X. first is the internal-battery. Not sure why, but many new Palms these days have internal-batteries. This is a problem for me or any who travels. Since some of my travel time is greater than 3 hours, the battery is not going to last that long--not for T|X. The inability to switch battery in-travel-time annoys me. 2nd is the minor screen buzzing sound, let's hope the sound won't increase any more (for the experienced users, you know what this sound is).

Comparing with the rest of the Palm's model, I would give it a 4.5 stars. T|X has more firepower compare with other Palms.
Unfortunately, this is a competitive market, and Palm is not the only one that is making PDAs anymore. Nice Palm, but noticeable issues that can bring it down. 3 stars.

    Lots of little problems, 2005-12-21
I finally replaced my ancient Handspring Visor with a shiny new Palm TX. I was excited by the ability to play MP3s, download photos, and view videos as well as be able to take some work documents home with me. Unfortunatly, what I didn't realize is that to use any of these programs you need to purchase an additional memory card - otherwise you won't have enough memory to do more than one thing. Other things I am not that happy with are: the graffiti is hard to figure out. After years of writing on my handspring the same graffiti does not work on the TX; The on/off button is too small and needs to be pushed at least twice to turn on; I've had to reset the device because sometimes it doesn't turn on at all. Overall, i'm getting used to it. I'm liking it more every day until something, like having to reset it, takes me three steps back. Bottom line, if you REALLY need all the things on the TX then go for it, but if not you may want to seriously consider a less expensive device. 9 MONTHS LATER: I hate this thing. It often does not turn on and all the fancy programs (even with a memory card) suck the life out of the battery. Before considering this device go to the Palm website to read the complaints - mostly about the turning on problem. I do not recommend this device - find something else. I tried to change this rating to ONE STAR but couldn't. The only reason I give it that is because the screen is a good size and has great resolution.

    Nice concept, poor execution, 2005-12-15
Having upgraded from a VX, and with my wife happily using a Tungsten E, I feel let down by this device.

The basic PIM services remain, albeit with their new names. The display is good, displaying photos well and making reading documents a real possibility on the device (especially with the full screen and portrait/landscape options).

WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity are intuitive, easy to set up and fast. The Web browser is fast and usable.

However, this device really fails on it "Email management". Despite the claims for Versamail 3.1c, it does not appear to deliver usable email management. After extensive dialogue with Palm, they have confirmed that there are several known issues with the way mail is handled:

-Email synchronisation between desktop and device is not possible, where the email account is set up to connect directly to a POP/IMAP server (e.g. WiFi, GPRS via Phone). The mail is downloaded to each location, and only when changes are made to the server are they then cascaded to each location.

-Email that requires SSL (e.g. Gmail) cannot synchronise with the desktop at all (SSL not supported via desktop connection)

-Gmail downloads only once, to your device or PC. The mail will not then download to a 2nd device (mailbox ends up split)

This is a real shame. I consider Email to be a core part of PIM, and to have some flaws of this nature a large oversight. Visiting the Palm forums, this is a common problem to many users. However, Palm do not have any plans to address the issue.

The device is also inherently less stable than older Palms - I've had several crashes requiring soft resets and in one case a hard reset. Its slower to turn on, and switching between apps is not the instantaneous thing it used to be.

Nearly there with this device, but let down by some annoying flaws in the design. If, as I suspect may happen, a "TX2" or similar comes out in 2006 it may well be better. Or, this might be the last generation of non Smartphone Palms.

Palm TX a step forward - Docking Cradle a step backward, 2005-12-13
I recently upgraded from my Palm V to the TX. I love the new TX... bright large display, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. However, my docking cradle kit arrived today and it is a disappointment. Why go forward with a product and backward with the peripherals. The lightweight dock wobbles and slides back when trying to enter information when it is in the cradle and instead of one cable running to the unit, there are two (three if you include the audio jack). More mess on the desk! The travel kit is larger and bulkier than the Palm V model. I love the TX but wish it would fit my old Palm V docking station and travel kit. Hey Palm people, here is an idea for your next releaase... make the docking station larger and heavier and the travel kit smaller and lighter.

New TX for wife has no WiFi, 2005-12-09
Just bought a new TX for the wife, and it did not have wifi. It did not have the icon at the bottom next to Bluetooth. It did not have any files listed under "Info" that had to do with wifi. And it did not have an application for Wifi in Preferences/system.

Got a bum unit. I spent hours trying to troubleshoot it, and doing research on the internet at sites like palminfocenter, brighthand, even palms user forums. No answers. This sucks. Wish I got paid for it all. It was just a waste of my time.

    I'm frustrated and angry.
