 Great for Non-Gaming, Lego- and Star Wars-Loving 8 year olds!, 2007-10-15
Disclaimer: We intentionally don't own any video game systems (unless you consider Mattel's HyperScan game a "video game system," which I don't), and we don't own a joystick. So my son plays PC and online games using the keyboard. Oh, and the computer I bought him to use for his online exploratinos and PC games is really slow.
Given all of the above limitations, my just-turned 8 year-old son and his best friend (who, I believe, has a PS2 at home but never plays it) LOVE this game. They take turns operating the controls, with the non-operator giving hints and offering suggestions about where to go and who to change into. The screens are nicely detailed and rich-looking (for a PC game), the options are varied, and the stories are relevant to my two Star Wars geeks-in-training. This game is about as violent as Super Mario Brothers. As I said, my son plays it with only one player, so if this game provides the opportunity for hand-to-hand combat, he hasn't seen it.
I would highly recommend this game for young-ish children who are not extremely experienced in gaming (and/or whose parents are, for whatever reason, delaying the inevitable morphing of their sweet little darling into a maniacal gaming cyborg - not that there's anything wrong with maniacal gaming cyborgs!). A child with experience playing PS2, Nintendo, etc., would probably be bored and/or frustrated.
Bottom line: it's cute, it's Lego, and it's Star Wars. Not much more. But if that's what you're looking for, this is your game.

Both my son and I have been able to play together with great fun, cooperation, and understanding of how things work.

My eight year old loves this game. The gameplay is right on target and I am very impressed how the designers were able to make the scenarios so accurate to the real movies -- using a lego environment. Its clever and entertaining. I highly recommend it for kids.
A great game!, 2007-07-10
A fun game, good for all ages. It combines the fun of Lego with the awesomeness of Star Wars. It's really good, but you might encounter some setbacks some time in the game. The level, Darth Vader, is hard because you have to time your jumps perfectly and jump a lot. I couldn't stop playing it for a very, very long time. I'm not even finished with it yet. My little sister likes it too (she is 6, almost 7,).

Buyer beware: Know your system before purchase!, 2007-07-07
I purchased this game for my son's 10th birthday. He is a huge Star Wars fan and loved Lego Star Wars II, which works fine on his Dell Dimension desktop. However, when we loaded this Lego Star Wars we got an error message telling us it was not supported by our system because we needed "pixel shader 1.1". My family is fairly computer literate, but this was beyond us. Turns out we needed a new graphics card AND a new power supply to support said card in order to play this game. This was especially frustrating because we have never had problems with Lego software before. We do not have an old system yet we ended up spending over $100 in upgrades in order to play this version of Lego Star Wars. These upgrades needed to be installed by a professional, which meant a number of days without our computer. Why Lego can't make its games run with the same system requirements is beyond me. I can't stress strongly enough how important it is to read the graphics card requirements and make absolutely sure they match your system's capabilities before you purchase this software. It looks straightforward, but IT IS NOT! (In case it helps other purchasers, we upgraded to a GeForce FX 5200 graphics card.) Once it's loaded, this game is "awesome" according to my 10-year old, but getting there may not be worth the effort if your system (not to mention pocketbook) is not up to it.
