    Totally Awesome, 2007-08-09
I bought this game for the sole purpose of using the mod, pds(point defense systems), and it totally rocks! talk about eye-candy, watching tracer fire being shot out of every side of a ship. a must buy if you like watching spectacular fighting between capital ships and dogfighters.

    BEST RTS EVER, 2007-06-13
Reading over the previous reviews I see a lot of 'inefficient interface' or 'poorly thought-out controls' For those people I can only say Read The Manual and follow the tutorial! I've played all the Homeworld games and HW2 is a worthy successor to the original. [...].There are some that are never mentioned in the tutorial, but if you look into the keyboard layout in Options, you will find all of them there.

The missions increase difficulty with the strength of your fleet, and the AI are not likely to do the same thing twice. So if you saved mid-mission and try one thing, then go back and try something else, the AI will react with another strategy. It feels much more like playing against a human opponent. This means you'll have to think on the fly and think strategically. This is, after all, an RTS game. Unlike most others, HW2 actually fulfills the meaning of the genre.

But no matter how strong the enemy is, you will always have more than enough resources. This is actually a drawback for me. Unlike the original Homeworld, where resources are limited and you must collect every spec of dust and rubble on each map, HW2 gives you the freedom to build to your heart's content. I miss the resource limitation, as well as the limited fuel in the corvette and fighter class ships and group formations. The unit variety are not as diverse as in the original, but the interface is practically flawless (if you learn all the commands) and the game is just fun (if you like to use your brain).

Bottom line, get this game if appreciate (the best of) space combat and (real) Real-Time Strategy (and micromanagement). This game will require a decent amount of learning time, but it's worth it for the graphics, the game play, and the strategy. Plus, it's dirt cheap now.

Lazy voice acting, extremely dense UI, uninvolving gameplay... Homeworld 2 just didn't work out, 2007-04-28
I'm not an expert of Homeworld series, I've never played any of the games other than this one, and I know nothing about the storyline. The intro video for Homeworld 2 really told me nothing more than these people called Hiigarans have found these things called "Cores", which an evil man wants for himself, and so he attacks and destroys many colonies of the Hiigarans because they won't give them up. I wish I could tell more, but that is literally all that the intro movie tells you.

Leaving it to more Homeworld-literate and informed reviewers to point out the flaws more in-depth, I'll simply tell from my point of view.

The User Interface is an utter mess of details and menus and submenus and obscurely shaped objects without labels that you have to figure out what they do by clicking them. It's incredibly difficult to deal with, and you have to figure out what the wire-frames of each individual ship is, otherwise you'll never figure out what ships you've selected in space, because they aren't labeled unless you hover your mouse over them.

The gameplay is terribly uninvolving. Due to the clunky controls, sight is a luxury not well spent on your own forces. Scrolling tends to go either too far in or too far away. You're either watching the ships too closely, or so far away you can't tell what they're doing. Another irritating feature is in cases of emergency, when you have to rush your ships over to enemies, is that you must click for them to attack the enemy as they zip past, because if you miss, your cursor will get stuck in a two-dimensional movement circle which essentially forces you to move the ship somewhere on its same plane in only two dimensions. Pressing escape resolves this, but it's still a severe deterrent in emergency situations.

The tutorial goes from baby-easy, to completely batnuts insanely difficult, as you go from one mission where you fight off a few enemy bombers pestering your Mothership, to fending off meager attacks on your transports, to suddenly encountering a fleet of several frigates, dozens and dozens and dozens of fighters and bombers, and only seconds after you're supposed to destroy the enemy half the map away in a resource field.

As the final sampling, the voice acting. Aside from the female voice of the Hiigaran leader, it seems they only hired one man to do the voices for all the ships and characters. And he does all of them in the exact same voice, lazy and monotone, even when his characters are about to die, sacrificing themselves to save you.

All in all, I couldn't believe how intolerably flawed this game was. It's just plain... bad. I've never played any of the other Homeworld games, but I hope the first is better than this one.

    Tough, but fun, 2007-03-13
I enjoyed this game a lot for many reasons, not the least of which is that it was quite difficult. I have to admit that it's been a while since I've played it so my review isn't going to be hugely detailed.
I know that some people might not enjoy the difficulty levels of this game, it does get very hard in some places, but for myself I enjoy difficulty. So many games lately have been a breeze, you sit down, you play, you win. That's it, you never have the chance to actually have to think, or face defeat.
The important thing to know, which will help a lot for those people who have a lot of trouble with this game, is that proper fleet composition is essential. I won't go into detail here, if you want to get some pointers on it, go to a place like [...] or something and read some of the FAQ's and walkthroughs, but with proper fleet composition, you will breeze through some missions that would otherwise be unplayable.
The storyline is interesting, though a bit odd and the end was a little unsatisfying, though the cutscenes are generally satisfying.
The graphics are wonderful, smooth and clean, the ship models are gorgeous and the weapons effects are also very nice. I enjoy zooming in all the way and watching the battles from up close and seeing all the explosions and everything.
Sound is pretty good, though nothing hugely special, it definately compliments the rest of the game well.
I think the game really stands out in the skirmish and multiplayer modes though. Where all of the options are available to you and you are able to use the whole map to your advantage, although the computer AI's don't use the Z axis in their strategy, which is unfortunate because it leaves them at a fairly big disadvantage as it is very easy to flank them from above or below.
Anyway, overall the game is quite good, a definate improvement over the original (which I liked a lot as well) in many ways. I think the gameplay was a bit better on the first one, (mission designs and AI design). I would certainly recommend it to anyone who enjoys RTS games, and especially those who like space based RTS.

    Homeworld 2 - Collector Review, 2007-03-08
I collect RTS games, and this is a must have game. Out of the box the game is challenging, but not too hard. In addition, there are modifications you can download to spice up the game. The game has a good balance between strategy and action, which keeps the interest in playing fairly high. The AI of the computer opponent is okay, which is depicted by a good effort for variation of its tactics.

Once you finish the main story, you can come back and play against the computer or friends. In addition, you can create basic scenarios. This aspect of the game is what makes it interesting to play.

I recommend this game to those who want a challenging game, but also want to have a game that will keep you coming back to play.
