One of R.E.M.'s TRUE Masterpieces, 1998-07-24
This album is very nearly the equal of "Murmur." These are the days when R.E.M. was making albums that were timeless classics, with not one bad song on the whole album. Quite the contrary -- these are fantastic songs that remain as fresh as when they were released in 1984, and served to influence a legion of college-rock bands in the '80s. A tour de force, and much much better than their recent offerings.

    14 years of pleasure, 1998-07-20
I put this on the other day, in between listening to Morecheeba's Big Calm and Nick Drake's Bryter Later. Now I like all of these a lot, but I realised that I bought Reckoning as my first R.E.M. release 14 years ago. It still moves me more than most things, it's still music I can immerse myself in totally. A pefect album. Yet it is constructed back to front, the backing vocals are in front of the lead vocals and the bass carries the main melody lines. It sounds weird yet makes perfect sense when you hear it. And don't you just love the way they do Rockville almost to say, "And this is how we can do straight songs when we feel like it - better than anyone else"

Deserves More Credit As A Masterpiece, 1998-06-18
Though largely forgotten -- or completely unknown by R.E.M.'s recent fans -- "Reckoning" stands out as a masterpiece. These songs are pure, powerful and layered with emotions. Is there a more sorrowful song than "So. Central Rain" anywhere in the modern musical lexicon? And "(Don't Go back To) Rockville" is a primer in straight-forward songwriting. No CD library should be without this one.

My favorite of their albums, 1998-06-07
This one may not be the critic's darling, but this album is my favorite of R.E.M.'s because of the sheer talent in the songcraft. Also, "(Don't Go Back To)Rockville" is still R.E.M.'s best song to date. Jefferson, I think we're lost...not!
