PowerquestFor many PC users, the ability to run several operating system on one PC is essential. The standard CFS client installation procedure uses an automatic partitioning mechanism which destroys all data on the hard disk. Two partitions are created for a Windows operating system and for data.
The automatic repartitioning option may be too crude for some computer users who have already installed an operating system on their hard disk. For example users may wish to preserve their current installation of Linux, at the same time creating a big enough partition into which they can install Windows 2000/XP. PM4 provision is targetted at these advanced users.
The University's licence is for PartitionMagic 4.0 and for reasons of cost, we are unable to upgrade it. PM4 supports Microsoft's NTFS(5) file system that is used by Windows 2000. However it does not support the revised NTFS file system used by Windows XP. This means:
You can use PM4 to create partition layouts for Linux and any version of Windows (98, 2000, NT4, XP)
You can use PM4 to move and resize the following partitions: Linux, FAT/FAT32 and older NTFS (2000 and NT4)
Do not attempt to use PM4 to move and resize Windows XP NTFS partitions
